Ever wake up stressed?  I did and I noticed it.  Stress can be a bit of an unkind messenger, but still an early warning sign that something is breaking.  Kind of like the light ‘service needed’ that can appear on the dashboard of my car letting me know that the car needs something to keep running the way I’m driving it and if I ignore this light (which I’m tempted to do in the midst of all the other things asking for my attention) I might end up going from needing a simple oil change to having to repair a major part in a b...

For the last year I've been working on a parenting book inspired by a time I had in prayer. I can remember the exact spot on a Scottish side road where I had a thought to pull over because God wanted to talk to me about something. I don't get these a lot so when I do I pay attention. Pulling over on a Scottish road is not as easy as it sounds. The two lane road consists usually of one and half lanes with stone fences right along side and the speed limit is usually 60mph. I found an entrance to a field and pulled our little...

The first weekend of November we are doing a training entitled "God is in the room, now what?" We write/talk a lot about the fact that God is in the room and that we can actually interact with God and hear God's voice. For some of us that is revolutionary. Both that God is present with me as I sit and write this AND that I could actually interact with this God and claim to hear what God is saying. It is pretty crazy and as Greg continues to do work on his PhD it turns out there are people who has spent quite a bit of time...

The first time my kids read the bible, the adult version rather than the kid's version, they were shocked at how messy the stories are. In the children’s bible David is a shepherd who kills Goliath and later becomes a great king. Moses leads the Israelites through the Red Sea and gets the 10 commandments. Joseph has an amazing coat and gets enough food to feed his family in Egypt. It is a bible without mess. A bible of heroes. I’m not proposing that these people weren’t or aren’t heroes. But we don’t tell the full story. W...

I'm drinking tea out of one of my favorite mugs, from one of my favorite people, with one of my favorite reminders from God on it--birds. For 17 years birds have been a constant reminder from God to not be anxious. 17 years ago this September I took a walk around the grounds of a Catholic Seminary down the street and tucked away in corner of the bay area. I had just gotten married, moved to a new state and started a new job.  As I walked all of the noise of the bay area became muffled and I could hear birds. God reminded m...

Do you ever want to feel, see or hear God’s love more? Behind Greg’s desk is a huge picture of a wave. Not only does he love (and miss) waves but they are symbolic of so many things in life.  Think of the waves of the sea.  One wave comes after another, in different sets, in different sizes, different tides, but over and over, wave after wave.  Some liken God’s love to waves of liquid love constantly coming, wave after wave. And just like waves you can experience God’s love in so many different ways. You can experience the...

When I say ‘relax’, don’t hear this as being as quiet as you can, as physically still as you can, as alone as you can.  Totally erase the contemplative monk in solitary prayer from your mind–and the kid with folded hands and bowed head silently praying.  This type of prayer may be very relaxing for some and incredibly boring and tedious and anything but relaxing (as their minds race and their emotions rush) for others.  When I’m praying it can often be anything but quiet, still or calm–when my oldest was 5 he used to think...

When our eldest was 2 1/2 years old we were walking along the street one afternoon and out of nowhere he asked "Mom, what is the difference between God and Santa?". I was not prepared for this question and decided I'd better tell him the truth: Santa is made up but based on a true person and God is real. I didn't want to lie nor did I want to confuse the two. For some the likeness is rather striking: an old bearded man who we never see, lives far away and if we are good will give us gifts, but if we are bad will either pun...

For us, with four kiddos, it is the end of a long race--the end of the school year. Lunches, homework, clean clothes, sporting events, waking up on time and going to sleep on time. In the midst of all the "to-dos" I think we all know that what matters most may not be what happens most. In the circles I’ve run in busyness hinders intimacy with God and maturity in the Spirit more than persecution, more than suffering, more than unresolved hurt and doubt. I’ve seen it in my own life and talked with many others, experiences of...

Do you ever find it hard to hear God's voice or find it hard to figure out which voice might be God's? Have you ever been in a situation where you are trying to make a big decision or even a little decision but you feel afraid? One of the biggest blocks to hearing God is something that we experience on a daily basis-fear. The different fears can be endless: fear of making the wrong decision; fear of missing something; fear of failure. The problem is that fear lies. Fear is False Expectations Appearing Real. It takes s...
